An open female is a female that is not pregnant.
An adult female that has not been pregnant and has not given birth is called a maiden or unproven female.
A female that has given birth to a cria is called a Dam.
Generally female alpacas are desirable to own. Female alpacas reproduce to have more alpacas.
Female alpacas are considered sexually mature at age 2 – 3 years of age.
Alpacas are induced ovulators, which means that the act of mating and the presence of seman causes them to ovulate. The female alpaca generally will be receptive unless they are already pregnant.
