Description
What is the difference between black alpaca fiber and white alpaca fiber?
The main difference is the color. Both Black and white alpaca fiber are excellent fibers. White might be more versatile because it can be dyed in so many colors. Whereas black is rare and admired for its unique look.
Both black and white alpaca fibers can have similar qualities such as warmth, softness, uniformity and hypoallergenicness.
Monet’s fleece 2025
While it is a little dusty at this time you can still see the deep black color. This fleece has been lightly skirted and rolled in a noodle making it easier for you to look at and work with.
The weight is 44 oz (or 2lbs 12 oz.) The staple length is 3 & 1/2 inches. This fleece has not yet received a histogram but to the best of my analysis it is a grade 3.
Grade 3 fibers are most versatile. Fleece is uniform in micron, density, shine and crimp.
Asking $2.00 per oz
The crimp in this fleece is deep with a frequency of 5 per inch.
Cleaning:
This fleece is dusty and with very small vm (vegetable matter). It could be cleaned by shaking it or tumbling. Also a rinse in dawn dish soap will remove the dust and dirt. Once you have soaked it at least 3 times in small amounts you will have a fantastic black fleece to card or comb to use in your projects.
Why is crimp important?
First let it be known that crimp is a natural wave in the individual fibers. How crimp is expressed is determined by genetics. Crimp comes in a variety of sizes or frequency and can be shallow or deep. Frequency is the number of crimps per inch. Amplitude is the height of the crimp.
The look of the crimp may change during processing but the fiber structure will still be there. A well crimped fiber will retain memory even after it has been processed. A good crimped fiber adds to its elasticity and drape qualities of the fiber.
Crafted with Care
We take tremendous pride in how our fibers are processed. Some of our fleece goes to family-owned mini mills, while other batches are hand-processed right here by Julie on her Kromski spinning wheel. This particular fleece represents our commitment to quality and our love for creating products that are as beautiful as they are functional. Advantageously, our alpaca fleece is sustainable, hypoallergenic, and sourced with care right here in the USA.
